NDA distributes imported dairy cattle

Some
1,220 imported dairy cattle worth about P60 million are now being
distributed by the National Dairy Authority (NDA) to qualified farmers in
various parts of the country. Earlier,
the animals underwent quarantine at the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC)
compound at Central Mindanao University (CMU) in Musuan, Bukidnon in
accordance with applicable regulations Under
applicable regulations, imported large animals are subject to quarantine
within a 30-45 day period.
The dairy cattle being distributed consist of 1,200 pregnant
Holstein-Sahiwal heifers; 10 pregnant, pure Holstein-Freisian heifers; five
pure Holstein-Sahiwal; and five Holstein-Freisian breeding bulls.
The said animals were supplied by Wrightson Export of New Zealand. These
arrived in the Philippines on July 17 through the Cagayan de Oro City port. The
importation and projected distribution are part of NDA’s efforts to build
up the local dairy herd in order to achieve increased local milk production
The recipients in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao were identified based
on a set of criteria, which include their preparedness in terms of housing
for the animals, pasture developed, financial capability to properly
maintain the animals, and standing of the cooperatives of which they are
members.
The recipients will provide repayment in kind for each animal given them in
the form of a pregnant offspring.
At present, there are 67 NDA-assisted dairy cooperatives with a total
membership of 4,682 farmers. These coops are based in such areas as Laguna,
Quezon, Cavite, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Sorsogon, Cebu, Davao and Misamis
Oriental. The NDA also assists state colleges and universities (SCUs), local government units (LGUs) and non-government organizations (NGOs), which have dairy projects involving 880 farmers. |
